Demi Moore wants you to know that farting is okay.
The 61-year-old actress has teamed up with digestive medicine company Wonderbelly to discuss the importance of digestive health, as outlined in a new book called The Grown-Up's Guide to Farting. The book is written by Wonderbelly co-founder Lucas Kraft and illustrated by Jessica Paige Dawson.
In a video shared by Moore and Wonderbelly on Instagram on August 1, Moore is seen reading pages from the company's new book to her adult children. "What makes a fart?" Moore asks as she reads from the book, which details everything you need to know about flatulence, including its history, why we do it, and the best ways to hide it.
Kraft, who founded Wonderbelly with his brother Noah in 2022, tells PEOPLE that he was inspired to launch the company because of his own experience with an eating disorder as a teenager. After recovering, Kraft relied on over-the-counter antacids to manage his symptoms, and realized that the medications he was using contained ingredients that had been removed from drinks, food and beauty products.
“These are still the same brands that have been around for generations and no one is challenging these companies to meet the values of the younger generation who are struggling with these issues,” Kraft says. Wonderbelly, according to its website, is an over-the-counter solution made with vegan, non-GMO and non-active ingredients.
Moore says he learned about Wonderbelly because his daughter Rumer, 35, used antacids during her pregnancy.
“When I introduced [Rumer] to Wonderbelly, she loved the effective, flavorful and clean ingredients,” Moore says. “Unlike traditional drug brands, Wonderbelly offers clean medicine and raises awareness for issues like eating disorders and common body functions.” The actress also noted that she learned how important it is to talk about digestive health with adults, in particular.
“Digestive health is an important but often taboo topic,” Moore says. “As babies, we’re praised for bodily functions like pooping and farting, but as adults, we often hide these normal processes. A conversation I had with Lucas, founder of Wonderbelly, inspired the book An Adult’s Guide to Farts , which highlights that embracing these functions is better for our physical well-being.”
Moore says she learned a lot about digestive health while working with the company (which also encourages conversations about digestive issues through its “Spill Your Guts” initiative), including the importance of “clean, effective medicine to help support our guts.” And while An Adult’s Guide to Farts is an educational resource, both Kraft and Moore agree that it’s also a fun way to embrace what some might consider an embarrassing topic.
“This book for us is a way to continue our mission of destigmatizing and helping people be more accepting of normal bodily functions,” Kraft says. “We’re on a big mission to destigmatize everything from eating disorders to farting. There are things we should be more comfortable talking about.”
“While it’s a fun and lighthearted book, it has a message about self-acceptance,” Moore added. “It’s a fart read that aims to leave readers smiling, feeling more informed, and less ashamed of their bodies.”/people.com
